Chapter 76
Overview
Raeve drifts in and out of consciousness, reliving a cell where she cradles Fallon and protects her from imagined threats. The vision soothes Raeve’s rage before collapsing into darkness. A surge of silver light and overwhelming love floods her soul, transforming her inner state and leaving her feeling whole.
Summary
Raeve awakens to crushing head pain beneath a ceiling dotted with finger-smeared moons, recalling Fallon’s voice naming each orb. Convinced she is dreaming, Raeve recognizes a frail fae on a nearby pallet—Fallon—shivering and weak. Overcome, Raeve pulls Fallon close, positioning herself between Fallon and the barred door to keep her safe.
As Raeve hums a calming tune and breathes in Fallon’s altered but familiar scent, her fury ebbs. The memory of their earlier hope contrasts with the hardship suggested by the cell, but Raeve refuses despair and clings to the comfort of the moment, nursing a rare sense of peace.
Pain drags Raeve deeper into unconsciousness. Images fracture: a parchment lark that tears when held, and a landscape of black, blue, and white. A sharp ache in her chest merges with a fiercer, desperate rage, then drains into a hollow void.
Into that void surges a roaring love, a silver light that burrows into Raeve’s core and reshapes her sense of self. The presence recasts her essence into something other—limited only by her mind yet freed from a different kind of cold—leaving Raeve feeling unexpectedly and profoundly whole.
