Chapter 98

Overview

Raeve safeguards her family in a hidden suite while Pidra stabilizes Kaan and Kyzari. Kaan briefly wakes, assuring Raeve that Slátra’s heart still beats with hers. Seeking answers, Raeve enters her inner realm and reconnects with Slátra, discovering a shared memory-stone and preparing to relive Kyzari’s birth. The chapter pivots from survival to reckoning with lost time and buried pain.

Summary

Raeve returns to a dim sleepsuite, finding Ahvi safe and watched by his Fate Herder. She tucks him in, wary of the beast, then checks the adjoining room where Pidra, exhausted but precise, tends to the gravely wounded Kaan and the unconscious Kyzari. Concerned about lingering loyalists and Sereme’s threat, Raeve keeps Kaan’s blood and the room secure while Pidra departs to rest and check on Veya.

Alone, Raeve sits with Kyzari, troubled by the diadem that binds the Aether Stone and sensing it harms her. She places the repaired paper lark, Nee, in Kyzari’s hand, mourning its lost magic yet grateful their paths converged. Raeve then lies beside Kaan, who stirs and, overcome by relief at Kyzari’s breathing, briefly wakes. He conveys that Slátra’s heart still beats with Raeve and that Slátra waits, before Raeve soothes him back to sleep.

Haunted by Kyzari’s silent plea and driven by the need for anchoring truth, Raeve takes both Kyzari’s and Kaan’s hands and turns inward. She lays aside her silver tendrils and descends beneath the ice of her inner lake into her Other’s den, where Slátra lies—a presence both here and not, familiar as home. At Raeve’s touch, Slátra responds, alive and ancient, and a wary peace settles over Raeve.

Slátra reveals a marbled stone, black and silver—both their memories braided. Raeve realizes this fusion explains the lost years and fractured self, and Slátra assures her of their unbroken bond: always together. Choosing strength over flight, Raeve settles within the nest, offers her silver splinter in exchange, and lifts the memory-stone to her chest.

As Slátra coils around her, Raeve accepts the flood of the past, bracing to witness the cold, painful moment she first met her daughter—the moment she brought Kyzari into the world. The chapter closes with Raeve poised to recover the truth she has missed.
