Chapter Thirty: Holden

Martian marines carry Holden out of the station’s caverns after the marine death and the lockdown. Silenced and restrained, Holden nearly asphyxiates before they reach a skiff and airlock, confirming the speed cap has tightened again and likely caused heavy casualties. His pleas to contact the Rocinante are denied.

Aboard the Hammurabi, Captain Jakande places Holden in military detention and interrogates him. Holden confesses his ongoing visions of Detective Miller, the station’s reactions to human actions, and the glimpses of dead suns. He emphasizes he misunderstood his role and that the station’s responses were not orchestrated for him. Jakande withholds contact with his crew, promising only to try for a report.

Left in his cell, Holden fixates on his crew’s safety and the fate of his ship. Miller then appears, explaining the station is jumpy from high-energy activity across the fleets. Miller proposes a solution: shut down fusion reactors and internal power grids to drop below a threat threshold so he can ease the lockdown.

Miller warns that lifting the dampening would also reopen all surviving gates. Though the burned-out ones are gone, opening the rest risks exposing humanity to whatever destroyed the protomolecule’s empire. He suggests the alternatives: retreat quietly or open the way and investigate. Miller prefers opening them to keep searching for answers, but urges Holden to consult the living.

Holden recognizes the stakes and his lack of authority. He jokes about his inability to set policy, and Miller dryly notes Holden’s poor choice of allies, leaving Holden trapped between fear for his crew and a galaxy of perilous choices.
