Chapter Thirty-One: Melba

In a former livestock ward now serving as a brig, Melba floats in catatonic detachment as the Behemoth’s drum begins spinning. As spin gravity slowly builds, she lets herself slide to the deck, ignoring a nearby prisoner who alternates between pleading and posturing. Background talk of loyalty and mutiny drifts by as she refuses food, help, or engagement.

Security chief Carlos “Bull” Baca contacts Melba via a guard’s hand terminal, laying out the case against her: the Melba Koh/Clarissa Mao identity conflict, the Rocinante sabotage, the gland implants, and accusations of blowing up the Seung Un. He warns she’s facing summary execution unless she talks. Melba remains unresponsive, and Bull withdraws to try a different approach.

The neighboring prisoner claims to be the ship’s captain and offers protection if Melba frees him, but she remains inert, lost in fragmented thoughts of family and failed plans to destroy Holden unnoticed.

Tilly Fagan arrives despite security’s concerns and sits with Melba. Tilly gently informs her that Ren’s remains have been found. The news shatters Melba’s reserve; she collapses into Tilly’s arms, grieving and apologizing.

In the aftermath of her breakdown, Melba admits to Tilly that she killed Ren and confirms she planted the bomb on the Seung Un and framed Holden, all to avenge her father. Tilly labels Jules-Pierre Mao “a first-class shit,” continues to comfort Melba, and says she wants Melba to talk to someone, hinting at a next step.
