Chapter Twenty-Two: Holden

Holden commits to his EVA toward the blue-lit station while the Rocinante drifts under the slow zone’s speed cap to avoid incoming fleets. Naomi and Alex track two skiffs, likely marines, closing on Holden as he approaches. After hours alone, he reaches the sphere; it irises open and swallows him.

Inside an inverted-dome chamber with a thin neon–benzene atmosphere and strange mosslike textures, Holden meets Miller, who seems more coherent and capable. Miller urges haste, saying marines are minutes behind, and leads Holden deeper through organic tunnels into a vast cathedral-like space filled with pulsing blue columns and folded insectile constructs.

Miller warns the station is an empty, locked-down remnant of a vanished civilization—doors and lights without the master—and that Holden’s entry was dangerously reckless. As Martian marines arrive, Holden tries to parley, but their gunfire freezes into a drifting cloud; the station blocks projectiles before they travel.

One marine fires a grenade. The blast injures a construct, triggering multiple constructs to activate, dismember the grenadier, and then exude yellow material to regrow the scorched moss, erasing damage. Miller calls this the consequence: the station has learned that even baseball-speed objects are threats.

Miller explains the station will now protect itself by taking control of ships that might be dangerous and that its slowing won’t be gentle. Holden realizes this likely means widespread deaths as vessels exceed the new threat thresholds, and that even the Rocinante could be caught. Miller, weary, can offer no protection—only warnings—as they push deeper.
