Chapter Thirty-Four: Clarissa

In Behemoth’s makeshift brig, Clarissa endures a numbing routine under armed guard, detached from time and only stirred by memories of killing Ren and of her father. She expects either another visit or death. Anna, the woman from Thomas Prince and the Rocinante, arrives and insists on a private conversation.

Over a guard’s objections, and with Ashford watching from his cell, Anna gets Clarissa moved to an unused freezer that locks from the outside. Once alone, Anna introduces herself and explains her connection through Tilly. They sit on the deck, and Anna admits fear yet concern; Clarissa acknowledges the danger of her implants and the reality of the situation.

Prompted by Anna, Clarissa voluntarily confesses to sabotaging the Rocinante and Seung Un, killing Ren, and committing earlier crimes on Earth, stating she is guilty and wants that reported. Anna explores motives—Clarissa’s need to redeem her father and to erase Holden by harming his crew—and asks if Clarissa has a message for Naomi, which Clarissa deflects with indifference.

Anna probes further, asking whether Clarissa seeks redemption or could accept forgiveness. The suggestion enrages Clarissa, who rejects the justice of forgiveness for her actions and curses the idea. Her raised voice brings the guard back early; he ends the meeting at gunpoint.
