Chapter Twenty: Holden

Holden leverages his media polish to film a briefing for Monica’s documentary, explaining the slow zone: a million-kilometer, starless sphere studded with 1,373 gates, a central metallic “Ring Station,” and an absolute external speed cap of 600 m/s that captures fast objects into an orbital debris ring. He outlines the plan to stay still, study, and repair comms to broadcast their innocence.

While Naomi isolates the compromised comm array, she can’t stop a recurring software hijack. Amos bursts in, furious, with a hidden device he found in the head’s LED housing. Realizing the bug reloads the hijacker at every reboot, Holden confronts Monica’s crew with Amos and Alex backing him. Under threat, Cohen steps forward and confesses he installed the device for pay, claiming ignorance of its purpose during the missile attack.

Pressed for the client’s identity, Cohen uses his sculpting tools to recreate her face. The model clearly resembles Julie Mao. Monica and her team are shocked; Cohen is locked in the airlock as an improvised brig, and the filmmakers are confined to crew decks. With the bug disabled, Naomi restores the comm array.

Alone with Naomi, Holden reevaluates a year of haunting messages from “Miller” and the new manipulation pointing to “Julie.” He concludes the protomolecule has deliberately steered him into the slow zone. Watching debris join the Ring Station’s orbit, Holden decides he must go there to understand why it’s contacting him.

Naomi challenges his pattern of self-sacrifice but can’t refute his logic. They agree on roles: Holden will make the risky approach to the station, and Naomi will command the Roci and keep the crew safe, despite her frustration at being left behind again.
