Chapter Fifty-Three: Clarissa
Overview
Anna persuades Holden to transport Clarissa by having Tilly buy the Rocinante from Mars, securing the crew’s legal ownership. Clarissa transfers aboard under restraint as the flotilla prepares to depart. Fred Johnson declares the Behemoth a permanent hub. On the Roci, small kindnesses and repairs begin Clarissa’s fragile, conditional integration.
Summary
Drifting in and out of painful recovery, Clarissa hears Anna ask the Rocinante crew to ferry her safely to Luna for trial. Holden refuses until Anna leverages Tilly Fagan to purchase the Rocinante from Mars and gift clear title to Holden, removing legal risk. Holden agrees, and Clarissa greets him with a frail, symbolic handshake.
During a memorial led by Captain Michio Pa, Clarissa is transferred under a medical restraint cuff keyed to sedate her if she violates conditions. As the exodus looms, Alex notes some Martians will remain to survey the gates. The shuttle docks with the Rocinante.
Onboard, Clarissa isolates herself, feeling like a prisoner among survivors she once tried to kill. In the galley, crew banter over “real coffee” briefly includes her when Naomi offers a gentle, joking welcome, which unexpectedly moves Clarissa.
Holden later watches a message from Fred Johnson, who apologizes for past demands and announces the Behemoth will stay as a refueling and farming hub. He offers the Rocinante potential escort contracts. Clarissa, overhearing, realizes she and Holden won’t be friends and accepts the boundary.
Amos, practical and unflinching, invites Clarissa to help fix a jammed hatch she damaged during her sabotage. He loosens her restraint limits enough to reach the machine shop. Working the problem, Clarissa suggests a failing actuator arm; the simple act of repair gives her a rare sense of purpose.
