Chapter Fifty-Two: Holden

Holden runs low on ammo during a firefight on the Behemoth’s bridge as Corin and Cass trade fire with Ashford’s people. A sudden blackout and gravity shift throw Holden into disorientation—and into a Miller-created simulation on a tranquil alien plain.

Miller, sounding vast and detached, shows Holden the now-open network of gates and calmly states the station is off lockdown and its lethal security is permanently disabled. He notes no hostile incursions yet, but warns of “doors and corners,” invoking a long-ago galactic war that erased the civilization that built the network.

Miller explains that the protomolecule’s purpose is to build roads and complete connections; lacking initiative, it uses Miller to investigate what destroyed its makers. He tells Holden the mission isn’t about helping humanity—and then adds he will need a ride.

Holden snaps back to darkness and confusion on the bridge. A commanding voice—Hector Cortez—orders a cease-fire, and lights from suit lamps reveal the scene. With the lockdown ended, Holden declares it’s over and urges restoring power.

Cortez organizes repairs and medical aid. Clarissa floats wounded by an access panel after sabotaging power to abort Ashford’s shot; Cortez stabilizes her. Ashford drifts nearby, twitching and slack-jawed, effectively out of the fight. Naomi moves to contact radio ops, check on allies like Anna, Monica, and Amos, and raise the Rocinante, while Holden, exhausted, focuses on getting his crew out.
