Chapter Forty-Nine: Anna

Anna regains consciousness in the Radio Free Slow Zone studio amid gunfire, tangled with debris and Okju’s corpse, her own neck throbbing. Amos and a mixed defense team repel attackers sent by Ashford. With Clip shot and bleeding and Okju dead from the sudden drum stoppage, Anna recognizes Ashford’s willingness to sacrifice civilians and resolves to act.

Anna checks the broadcast closet, finds Monica at the equipment, and forces focus: confirm the gear works and open a channel. She hails James Holden, who reports that he, Naomi, and one more are trapped at the port elevator shaft outside the command deck, with Bull and marines fighting farther down. They cannot retreat and need the bridge opened.

As Amos breaks an assault and sporadic fire continues, Anna switches to a general broadcast, pleading for help and warning that Ashford’s plan to fire the comm laser at the Ring could kill everyone back home. Clarissa, monitoring from the bridge security station, calls in to question the claim. Anna admits she is acting on faith in Holden’s warning because the stakes are existential.

Hector Cortez joins the line, dismissing Anna’s fears and invoking necessary sacrifice. Anna counters by naming specific lives at risk—Holden, Naomi, and Bull—and reminding Clarissa that each spared or protected her despite past harm. She contrasts their mercy with Ashford’s expedience, asking Clarissa plainly whether she can let them die.

After a tense silence and Cortez’s continued justifications, Clarissa quietly acts. Over Cortez’s alarmed protest, Clarissa announces she has opened the doors, allowing Holden’s group access to the bridge and undermining Ashford’s control as the firefight around Anna subsides to scattered shots.
