Chapter One: Holden

Holden reflects on childhood dread while he and the Rocinante crew—Naomi, Amos, and Alex—celebrate a string of profitable contracts in a Ceres VIP casino. The crew enjoys their success, upgrades to the ship, and camaraderie, while Holden masks a growing unease.

In a quiet restroom, Holden is confronted by the apparition of Detective Miller, moving with uncanny, inhuman tics and speaking in cryptic fragments. Miller claims “everyone’s here at once,” references empty places, and says, “It happened,” before vanishing. Frightened, Holden resolves to shield his crew from these encounters, though Naomi quickly intuits that Miller has reappeared.

Holden and Naomi discuss whether the presence is truly Miller or the protomolecule mimicking him. Miller’s final line—“It happened”—lingers without explanation as the crew returns to their routines and prepares to depart.

Two days later aboard the Rocinante, emergency newsfeeds reveal that a slingshot racer entered the Ring and did not emerge, a fact suppressed for nearly two days. Amos and Naomi confront the report with Holden, recognizing it as the event Miller intimated. The disappearance inside the Ring reframes Miller’s warning and signals that the alien structure poses a deadly, unknown threat.
