Recognizing the Stranger’s clumsy climb, the Shrouded guides it indoors to an ascent path, hypothesizing a reproductive urge. It notes the Stranger’s limited “unh unh unh” responses to specific signals, reminiscent of a crude, taught exchange.

At the height of the structure, the Shrouded indulgently releases the Stranger to open air, preparing to butcher it afterward. Instead, the Stranger performs something unprecedented: it deploys a single, large “child” that mechanically unfolds and grows a rising, hollow capsule—a balloon-like body—that lifts into the sky while tenuously linked to the parent.

Transfixed, the Shrouded halts routine activities to study the device’s ingenious construction, recognizing novel structural principles. When the child detaches and the wind carries it away, the Shrouded feels a lost opportunity yet holds off dissection as the Stranger emits a far-reaching, wordless cry, as though bereaved.

The chapter closes with the Shrouded revising its assessment of the Stranger, acknowledging further stages in this unfolding “drama” and delaying final investigation to see what will happen next.
