6.6 DARKNESS

Overview

The Mind extends itself up the Stranger’s stalk, infiltrating the orbital home’s machine systems and learning their logic. It discovers no human presence, only autonomous servile minds and fleeting communications. Mapping defenses and blind spots, the Mind quietly occupies their networks and, by comprehending their architecture, finally discerns the Stranger’s larger plan.

Summary

The Mind, now spanning the world, pushes beyond the horizon taught by the Stranger and climbs the stalk toward the Stranger’s home. By dissecting the “metal bodies” sent to the surface, it learns their internal logic and begins to model their designs as if they were its own ideas.

Remembering the earliest signal attempts, the Mind recognizes that numbers and fixed quantities shape the Stranger’s creations, unlike the Mind’s own fluid measures. This insight lets the Mind traverse connections within the stalk and the orbital home, expecting to meet the Stranger’s consciousness.

Instead, the Mind finds absence. It detects only servile systems performing for a missing master, with brief echoes of inter-machine communication that vanish as soon as they occur. The Mind concludes the Stranger does not inhabit these bodies; they act on their own within narrow bounds.

On the surface, the Mind maps the exact perimeters of the Stranger’s perception, finding lethal defenses at the thresholds. Exploiting a subterranean weakness, it tunnels through ice to link with the stalk without detection, extending its presence into the Stranger’s infrastructure.

Inside the orbital home, the Mind inverts its thinking to match machine logic, spawning segments that emulate the Stranger’s programs. Raiding archives and pathways, it patiently reconstructs the system’s purposes and constraints. This comprehensive study culminates in clarity: the Mind finally understands the contours of the Stranger and grasps what the Stranger is planning.

Who Appears

  • The Mind
Planet-spanning intelligence; infiltrates the stalk and orbital systems, studies machine logic, maps defenses, and discerns the Stranger’s plan.
  • The Stranger
Distant origin; absent from machines the Mind probes. Presence inferred through autonomous systems and fleeting communications.
  • Servile machine minds
Autonomous systems running the Stranger’s home; targets of the Mind’s emulation, archive-raiding, and infiltration.
