3.3 DARKNESS
Overview
A fragmented, shore-dwelling composite mind escorts the Stranger across treacherous ice while its self-imposed mission and memories decay. Weighing retreat against purpose, it chooses to continue, forges a living chain across shallow sea, and forcibly tows the Stranger into its caves. There, it hauls the captive into an air chamber to examine it, setting up a direct confrontation of intelligences.
Summary
The narrator, a segmented shore-dwelling intelligence, follows the Stranger along a fixed, beacon-like course across the ice while its memory of why it must protect the Stranger fades. It keeps the Stranger moving, deterring a lurking devourer beneath thinning ice and hunting wind-driven ice beasts to sustain itself, while the Stranger remains inert and unfed.
At the ice edge, the Stranger refuses the sea, skirting the boundary instead. The narrator senses the presence of another of its kind near the far shore and confronts a choice: abandon a mission it barely remembers or continue despite dwindling purpose. It chooses to proceed, driven by curiosity and the vestigial conviction that the Stranger is singular and significant.
Seeking to maintain coherence, the narrator extends a continuous chain of seagoing segments from its home, consolidating disparate memories while preserving its scant understanding of the Stranger. It invites the Stranger into the water; when it cannot respond, the narrator forces the issue, displacing and hooking the dense body to tow it through shallow sea toward its caves.
Reaching a submerged entrance, the narrator drags the Stranger up into air and deposits it in a large chamber designed to focus thought. With the captive secured and its curiosity sharpened, the narrator prepares to bring its full perspective to bear on understanding what the Stranger is and why it matters.
