4.7 DARKNESS

Overview

A vast, segmented intelligence methodically begins dismantling an immobilized, shell-armored creature, fascinated by its construction. As it pries at a limb seam, the creature’s simple thought-signal triggers inherited memories and a warning. The dismantler hesitates and chooses to respond, shifting from destruction to tentative communication.

Summary

A large, multi-segmented intelligence studies an immobilized, heavily armored creature that emits a rudimentary thought-signal. Intrigued by its unique, impermeable shell, the intelligence pins the creature and prepares to extract whatever dwells within to learn how it constructs such a carapace.

It methodically applies force at a former limb joint, finding seams and attachment points that begin to yield. The dismantling is both difficult and fascinating, and the intelligence anticipates that the task will grow easier as more connections fail.

Amid the physical work, the creature’s thoughts again reach it: a simple, rhythmic grunting amid chaotic noise. This triggers a fragmentary memory—contextless but urgent—paired with the wordless admonition, “Don’t.” The intelligence reflects on its long dominion, its exchanged thoughts with neighbors, and a yawning ignorance that once replaced an earlier certainty.

Confronted by this resonance with inherited memories, the intelligence loosens its grip and, moved by an obscure compulsion, replies to the creature’s simple rhythm. The shift marks a decision to pause the disassembly and attempt a response, opening the possibility of communication.
