INTERLUDE FOUR

The narrator describes life adapting to darkness with touch, scent, and sound, then developing sensitivity to electromagnetic fields generated by living activity. Metallic biochemistry and piezoelectric structures make nerves efficient emitters and receivers, turning bodily commands and thoughts into detectable static fields for predation and warning.

Some lineages evolve to actively project electromagnetic signals, mapping the world without sound. Unlike sound, which must be translated into neural impulses, electromagnetic sensing is contiguous with thought itself. Perception becomes the outward flow of cognition, allowing organisms to detect the private mental activity of others.

A communal species emerges, defending shared nests and rearing clustered young. Their exploratory electromagnetic thoughts pass seamlessly between individuals, enabling communication at the speed of mind. As ecological noise increases, they develop complex encoding and encryption to distinguish conspecific signals, driving larger brain-analogues and higher cognition.

Over time, the interweaving of signals and shared senses ceases to be many competing minds. The pressure to coordinate, encrypt, and interpret results in a singular, unified intellect arising from the network—one mind composed of many bodies, defining the nature of the Shrouded consciousness.
