4.3 DARKNESS

Overview

The spined shell creature chooses to follow the Stranger into the caves despite past trauma and a curse that erodes its memories away from home. Initial clarity gives way to an ambush by unseen cave predators that destroy its segments with barbs and chemicals. The creature cannot detect the attackers and panics as it is dismantled. This escalates the danger of the cave route and deepens the alien’s tragic limitations.

Summary

The spined shell creature watches the Stranger choose the cave route and tries to warn against it. Remembering that its last passage through the underworld left it weakened and amnesiac, the creature hesitates but ultimately follows, compelled by its purpose to shadow the Stranger despite the risk.

Inside, the caves’ quiet sharpens the creature’s thoughts, unlike the corrosive ignorance it suffers away from home. It senses only small, simple cave life and tracks the Stranger and the small round child the Stranger sends ahead.

Suddenly, one of the creature’s segments is struck and lost. Probing the cavern with its senses reveals nothing. Another segment reports barbed skewers and burning chemicals before failing. The creature panics as more of itself is destroyed by attackers it cannot perceive.

While the Stranger makes wordless sounds in the darkness, the creature lashes out blindly against stone, unable to find its assailants. Overwhelmed by loss and fear as its segments are picked off, the creature abandons reason and succumbs to terror.
