5.4 DARKNESS

Overview

The Shrouded narrator follows the damaged Stranger beyond the Everstorm into a barren desert, realizing there is no hidden refuge ahead. With resources dwindling, the narrator risks dividing its mind to forage while remaining with the Stranger, then repairs its missing limb. Despite the aid, attempts to communicate fail, underscoring the Stranger’s opacity and isolation.

Summary

The Shrouded narrator pursues the Stranger beyond the Everstorm, recognizing this land as unfamiliar and not a remembered home of any prior segment. Hopes of finding a larger, communicable Stranger presence fade as the Stranger continues into a lifeless desert rather than revealing a refuge.

With supplies dwindling, the Shrouded dispatches airborne segments to scout for sustenance, but the toxic, barren terrain offers little edible life. To sustain both the pursuit and survival, the Shrouded divides itself: an Otherlike portion goes to forage while a grounded cluster remains with the Stranger, accepting the existential risk of losing unity and coherence.

Despite the danger of fragmentation, the Shrouded persists, motivated by the transformative potential of flight learned from the Stranger—an innovation that could collapse distances and link scattered selves. It resolves to remain close in case further secrets fall from the Stranger.

Observing the Stranger’s halting crawl, the Shrouded deduces a missing limb and improvises a repair, crafting and attaching a fourth leg from carried spars and struts. The Stranger wobbles but stands, confirming its prior impairment and suggesting it cannot maintain itself independently.

After assisting, the Shrouded reaches out, seeking any sign of thought within the Stranger’s closed metallic body. The attempt fails; only a repetitive “Unh unh unh” answers, deepening the mystery of whether the Stranger is a thinking fragment or a near-mindless remnant.

Who Appears
