1.6 DARKNESS

Overview

A vast Shroud intelligence becomes aware of a newly crashed object and organizes itself to study it. It recognizes the impact site, surrounds the “Stranger,” and detects multiple minds within an otherwise inert shell. The entity registers a call-and-response pattern and finally hears the intruder speak, signaling first contact.

Summary

An encompassing Shroud intelligence senses an unfamiliar presence and responds to it, repeating a pattern of call and response. It gathers itself from dispersed awareness to focus on the disturbance, recognizing it as unlike anything in its memory.

Extending its perception, the entity surveys the environment: jagged remnants above, shifting debris below, and a clenching border layer between mediums. It deduces an immense, instantaneous force of impact that formed a crater and left the strange object—the “Stranger”—at the center.

Drawing in more of its distributed attention, the intelligence examines the intruder from many angles. It perceives the object as bright, round, heavy, and paradoxically lifelike in its dead substance. Within the inert shell, it detects movement and cognition—minds—despite the exterior’s stillness.

Confronted with the unprecedented, the entity hesitates, lacking a precedent for action. As the object shudders, the intelligence reads surprise from it and maintains the ring around the site. In the final moment, the intruder emits a signal the entity interprets as speech, completing the sensed pattern of communication and marking initial contact.

Who Appears

  • Shroud intelligence
A vast, distributed local consciousness that detects, encircles, and studies the crashed intruder.
  • The Stranger (intruder)
The bright, heavy crashed object; externally inert but containing multiple active minds.
  • Unidentified minds within the intruder
Active cognitive presences sensed inside the object; they trigger call-and-response and speak.
