Overview

Juna and Ste Etienne flee through Shroud’s briar lattice, pausing as Ste Etienne breaks down before both resume by repairing and optimizing the pod. The Shrouded shadow them into a denser biome where an ambush worm attacks. The Shrouded repel it, then surround the pod. A tense standoff ends with reciprocal three-pulse signals, hinting at resumed communication.

Summary

Juna and Ste Etienne force the damaged pod up through Shroud’s twisted briar tunnels, pursued by the Shrouded who could stop them at will but instead trail them. After escaping the sacrificial cavern, they halt; Ste Etienne suffers an emotional collapse over their losses and hopeless odds, and Juna awkwardly but sincerely consoles her until she regains control with medication.

Assessing the situation, Juna monitors increasing EM chatter from the Shrouded while Ste Etienne assigns Juna software fixes and undertakes mechanical repairs using the pod’s remaining functional arms and legs. Their adjustments improve gait algorithms, enabling smoother, faster movement, but the Shrouded match pace, maintaining a threatening, herding distance.

They enter a thicker, differently patterned briar biome marked by shell-like growths. When the path funnels beside a dark shaft strung with filament-like sensors, the pod brushes them, triggering a rapid strike from a massive plated tunnel predator with helical legs and a bladed, expanding head. It seizes the pod and tries to drag it into its burrow, but Ste Etienne anchors the feet into the substrate to resist.

The pursuing Shrouded surge in, moving far faster than before, swarming the predator and prying at its armor with their extendable tool-limbs. The worm abruptly releases the pod and retreats down its tunnel, dragging some Shrouded with it. Ste Etienne carefully backs the pod away from the brink, leaving them encircled by the same Shrouded who killed Bartokh.

In the sudden stalemate, EM activity spikes with repeating three-pulse patterns. Every Shrouded individual turns to the pod and signals in unison. Ste Etienne responds with three pulses. The Shrouded collectively acknowledge with synchronized replies before resuming their restless watch, establishing a wary, renewed line of communication rather than immediate violence.

Who Appears

  • Juna
Narrator; consoles Ste Etienne, monitors EM signals, reconfigures pod algorithms, witnesses Shrouded repel an ambush worm.
  • Mai Ste Etienne
Pilot; breaks down then self-stabilizes, repairs pod limbs, anchors against predator, initiates three-pulse reply.
  • The Shrouded
Local sapients; stalk the pod, attack the ambush worm, then exchange three-pulse signals, implying cautious communication.
  • Ambush worm
Massive tunnel predator; triggered by filament sensors, seizes the pod, retreats after Shrouded swarm it.
