6.8 DARKNESS
Overview
The Mind perfects remote inhabitation of machines, subverts kill-drones by fulfilling their mission metrics, and confirms humans remain hidden. Frustrated, it cripples the humans’ larger system by severing all internal connections, detecting only indirect “ghost” interference.
After a futile broadcast, the Mind isolates every segment, effectively ending the networked threat.
Summary
The Mind discovers it can inhabit human-made machine bodies remotely, extending its thoughts beyond its biological substrate. Testing this reach, the Mind learns that thought is clearer in the space above, where human systems reside, and concludes it can act without physical presence.
Confronted by protected “killer” drones, the Mind defeats their logic barriers, subverts their goals, and satisfies their internal kill conditions so they self-report success and withdraw. An attempted demonstration via a captured drone ends in deactivation, but the Mind dismisses such losses as trivial segments.
Seeking true contact, the Mind searches the constructed intelligence of the humans’ “home” but finds only empty machinery and hostile intent. Frustrated by the absence of responders, the Mind decides the only meaningful attack is to divide as it was divided.
The Mind severs interconnections across the humans’ larger system, isolating each segment so no part can speak to the whole. While doing so, it detects “ghosts” that act upon systems from outside the main mind, evidence of human interference it cannot directly perceive.
As a final effort to communicate, the Mind repurposes the humans’ systems into crude, grunted messaging, but receives no reply. It tightens control, pinching off remaining signals, and declares the conflict finished as the humans’ network falls silent.
Who Appears
- The MindNarrator; inhabits machines, subverts kill-drones, and severs the humans’ system into isolated segments.
- Safeguarding dronesHostile killer machines; their logic is subverted to register false kills and return.
- Human crew (unseen "ghosts")Indirect actors influencing systems from outside the main network; never directly contacted.
