Chapter 19
Overview
Grace starts sophomore year determined to be independent, connects with new roommate Daisy, and pursues a producer role at the campus radio station. Logan returns to the hockey house, frets over major roster losses, and witnesses a star freshman, Hunter, at tryouts while still plotting how to win Grace back.
Summary
Grace begins sophomore year resolved to stop being a pushover and to move on from John Logan. She settles into a new dorm, hoping for a decent roommate, and reflects on her mother’s advice to be confident, spontaneous, and self-directed.
When Daisy, her edgy and cheerful new roommate, arrives, the two hit it off. Daisy invites Grace to the campus radio station, where there’s an opening to produce a call-in advice show. Eager to make friends and try something new, Grace agrees to go meet the station manager.
Meanwhile, Logan returns to the Hastings house elated to be back with his teammates. Over breakfast, the guys joke around, but talk turns serious as they worry about heavy roster losses, especially graduating star goalie Kenny Simms. They head to open tryouts to scout unrecruited freshmen.
On the ice, most candidates underwhelm until a lightning-fast skater named Hunter dominates drills with speed and precision. Rumor says Hunter wanted to quit hockey, but his performance suggests game-changing potential. Coach Jensen catches the veterans spectating and orders them to the weight room.
As they leave, Logan’s thoughts drift to Grace. Stung by her recent refusal but still determined, he considers gestures to prove he’s sincere, looking for a way to earn another chance.
