Chapter 15
Overview
Grace spends two weeks in Paris with her rejuvenated, art-focused mother, seeking distance from Logan and Ramona. Despite persistent calls, Grace refuses contact and reaffirms her break with Ramona after the betrayal. Her mother presses for healing but settles on action, steering Grace toward a mood-lifting makeover with Claudette.
Summary
In May, Grace has been living in her mother’s small Paris apartment for two weeks, savoring the Old Paris neighborhood and the calm routine. She reflects on her mother’s renewed happiness as an artist after leaving Massachusetts and a marriage that dulled her identity.
When Ramona calls in the middle of the night back home, Grace ignores it. She recounts the quiet end of their friendship after Ramona propositioned Logan while Grace slept: Ramona offered no excuse, and Grace moved out of the dorm the next day.
Grace’s mother suggests hearing Ramona out and notes Ramona’s past loyalty, but Grace rejects the idea, insisting the issue is betrayal, not Logan. The conversation turns to Logan’s attempts to contact her, which Grace also refuses to entertain.
Seeing through Grace’s forced cheer, her mother insists on breaking the funk. She scraps their river walk plan and proposes something “drastic”: a visit to her hairdresser, Claudette, for a makeover to spark genuine smiles.
