31: The Endless After

Aurora dresses for the day knowing her Sun’s mark will soon be complete and Caspian will die. In the dining hall, she witnesses Caspian thanking every member of the household and naming her worthy to succeed him. Overwhelmed, Aurora withdraws, promising herself to speak to the staff upon her return.

They depart by sleigh, and Caspian urges Aurora not to let his choices dictate hers, asking her to remember how to live. Aurora promises, though she resents his calm acceptance. Reaching the glacier, Caspian says his quiet goodbyes to the snow deer, then takes Aurora’s hand and leads her to the lamppost.

Caspian acknowledges the grief he once felt at his mentor’s death and assures Aurora she can survive this too. Aurora demands unvarnished honesty; Caspian admits solace that his magic will sustain the earth she walks, while Aurora vows to seek him beyond death. They share a final, fervent kiss and face the peaks together.

Caspian calls the Sun. As the light surges, Aurora confesses her hatred for the Sun for taking him. The Sun’s voice answers, and the last of Caspian’s magic floods into Aurora, feeling unmistakably like him. Caspian releases her hand; Aurora bears the light alone and completes the ritual by hanging it in the lantern.

Caspian collapses, and Aurora cradles him in the snow. He urges her to whisper his name in the endless after and to find him even in death. As the mountain stills, the light in his eyes fades and he dies. The Sun proclaims Aurora the Starmaker, and she weeps over Caspian as her reign begins.
