5: Falling Stars
Overview
Unable to sleep, Aurora stargazes and is joined by Aspen, who urges her to shape her own Starmaker life rather than submit to the Starmaker’s terms. Elsie appears, confident healing is near, and Mama brings the wedding cake. Their shared night of stories and laughter restores Aurora’s resolve and anchors her purpose.
Summary
In the sleepless aftermath of her broken engagement and shocking calling, Aurora lies awake mourning the safe life she almost had with Farren. She checks on laboring-breathed Elsie, then slips outside to the old fire pit to watch the stars, seeking calm and a sense of direction.
Aspen joins Aurora with cider, quietly acknowledging the enormity of the Starmaker Rising. He tells Aurora that, despite feeling cornered, she has a choice: to carry all of who she is into the role and decide what her life as Starmaker will be. His words strike Aurora deeply, offering permission and resolve.
Elsie arrives, stubborn and brave, noting the phlox is pink again and declaring she expects to be fully healed soon. Aurora begins to release her habit of treating Elsie like a child. Then Mama comes out with the unused wedding cake, and the family settles around the fire together.
In the cold night, bundled in blankets, they share cake, cider, stories, and laughter. The warmth of their presence reassures Aurora that her family will be all right. She resolves to carry them with her to the castle, to learn her magic on her own terms, and to weave her past into the future she will claim.
