3: An Improbability
Overview
Aurora encounters the Starmaker, who reveals her latent magic and declares she must train or die. He confronts her family, forcing a choice between death and duty. Aurora seizes control by demanding two conditions—healing Elsie and a replacement glare line via marriage. The Starmaker reluctantly agrees, altering her fate overnight.
Summary
In the snowy woods, a stranger stops Aurora’s shot at a forbidden snow stag and confiscates her arrows. When Aurora grabs his wrist, golden light floods her veins. He admits he has been waiting for her. Terrified, Aurora flees, but the man—appearing ahead with the stag—stops her again.
Recognizing his gold eyes and inhuman warmth, Aurora names him: the Starmaker. He notes “sunlight” in her blood, proof of magic, and declares she is to be the next Starmaker. He warns the awakened magic will kill her if unused. Aurora rejects him and hurries home.
At the cottage, the Starmaker and his stag arrive first. He informs the family of Aurora’s magic. Aspen speaks with reverence; Mama urges Aurora to go with him to live and train at the castle. Aurora resists, desperate to preserve her life with Farren and protect her family.
Pressed by the danger and seeing Elsie’s suffering, Aurora reframes the moment as a negotiation. She demands two conditions: the Starmaker must heal Elsie of the Frost, and he must replace the glare line her marriage to Farren would have created—achieved by marrying her himself.
Though disgusted by the idea, the Starmaker concedes there is no other way to form a glare line and accepts both terms. Their handshake ignites Aurora’s glow again, sealing the bargain. He vows to return before dawn to take her to the castle, leaving Aurora and her family stunned as her future is irrevocably changed.
