27: Beginning and End

Unable to sleep after learning the Starmaker’s fate, Aurora storms to his room and confronts him. He calmly admits he will die when she fully comes into her magic, explaining he withheld the truth to protect her progress. The acknowledgment breaks Aurora’s composure, and she pleads that she will not lose him.

They argue over agency and duty. Aurora rejects euphemisms for the transfer and swears she will not let it happen; the Starmaker insists it is immutable. At her request they kiss, a moment of tenderness amid grief. She presses for details, and he describes the ritual’s quiet end, the sleigh to the glacier, and his preserved body, recalling his own mentor’s passing.

The conflict intensifies as Aurora demands he try to escape fate, while the Starmaker refuses to spend his remaining days chasing an impossible solution. He admits bitterly that Aurora shattered the peace he had made with dying, even as he regrets they have too little time. She counters that he is worth fighting for and vows to search for a way, enraged on their behalf if he will not be.

Exhausted, they lie together in silence. A ceiling mural animates: the Sun with the first Starmaker, then the Sun’s departure, leaving the Starmaker weeping. A painted tear falls onto Aurora’s cheek, underscoring the grief woven into their legacy. She finally succumbs to a fitful sleep, resolved to resist the ending he accepts.
