Epilogue: Double Star
Overview
In a mountain village, a father tells his daughter the legend of the Double Star—Aurora and the fourth Starmaker—celebrating their loving reign, minimal Frost, and shared burial. He affirms they belonged to each other, not the mountain. The tale settles into the child’s heart, hinting at future beginnings.
Summary
On a peak in the Lost Range, a young girl asks her father for her favorite bedtime story: the double star visible from Reverie. He explains how, on the clearest nights, two close stars appear as one unless the sky is perfectly dark, when both can be seen.
He links the stars to Aurora, the fifth Starmaker, promising that one day they will read her published works. Framing it as a love story among many, he recounts how the fourth and fifth Starmakers fell so deeply in love that the Sun changed the mountain’s rules so their lives could continue together.
The father summarizes their reign: record warmth, minimal Frost, and the creation of new roses, along with unwavering devotion to Reverie and to each other. He describes their joint burial, their magic nourishing the mountain, and notes Aurora’s belief they would find rest after death.
Challenging public narratives, he insists the Double Star did not belong to the mountain; they belonged to each other, with Reverie merely borrowing them. He ends the tale tenderly and leaves as his daughter falls asleep.
As the girl sleeps, the story takes root within her, suggesting that what seems like an ending is also a beginning, and that their legacy may inspire what comes next.
