4: Liar
Overview
Aurora accepts the cost of becoming Starmaker: ending her engagement to Farren and marrying the Starmaker to secure her family’s future. Despite Farren’s desperate plea to run away and find another cure for Elsie, Aurora refuses. She chooses duty over love and steels herself in anger.
Summary
In the aftermath of the Starmaker’s visit, Elsie begs Aurora not to sacrifice herself, but Aurora decides the price is worth Elsie’s life and their family’s security. Aspen and Mama try to frame the awakening as an honor, though sorrow lingers, and Aurora gathers herself to face Farren.
Crossing the sunlit village, Aurora mourns the simple future she and Farren planned. At Farren’s home, she plays briefly with his sisters before asking Farren to walk with her, then recounts the morning: the Starmaker, the sunlight in her veins, his demand she move to the castle, and her bargain that he heal Elsie.
Aurora reveals she also required marriage to the Starmaker to replace the glare line she would forfeit by not marrying Farren. Farren, devastated, proposes moving with her or running away to find another cure for Elsie, arguing the Starmaker might have lied about the danger to Aurora.
Aurora believes the Starmaker’s warning and refuses to endanger Elsie or Reverie. Farren asks her to meet at their secret cave that night and reconsider, but she declines, unwilling to delay the bargain.
They part in grief and tenderness; Farren apologizes for her impossible position, and Aurora walks home, letting herself feel the loss of their life together. She then pushes sorrow aside, embracing anger as resolve for what comes next.
