Summary
On a mountain peak in the Lost Range, eight-year-old Aurora Finch asks for her favorite bedtime story, told by her mother. The tale recounts a northern village thrust beyond the Sun’s reach after a violent quake raises impassable peaks, leaving the community in perpetual darkness and deadly frost.
The Sun descends as a human to help, meets a compassionate man, and together they grieve, heal, and fall in love. With time running out, they devise a desperate plan: the Sun forges a golden lamppost and infuses the man with her light, creating an unbreakable bond so he can call sunlight into the village each day.
The transformation grants him long life and the duty to protect the mountain. The lovers part in anguish; the villagers later name him the Starmaker. Though separated by vast distance, they remain connected through the daily summoning of light and their enduring devotion.
