7: Rest

After the Starmaker departs to pull sunlight for Reverie, Aurora meets Ina, the castle’s manager, who notes his lateness is painful due to magic buildup. Ina guides Aurora inside a warm, opulent, magic-suffused castle, including a Sun-gifted statue of doomed lovers that sometimes cries, a ceiling of clear ice showing stars, and abundant flowers.

As they tour, a shimmering white rabbit follows. Aurora wrestles with grief for her lost life but hides her awe. Ina defends the castle’s beauty as compensation for a life of sacrifice. Shown to a lavish room, Aurora apologizes for her earlier skepticism. Left alone, she takes a restorative, ever-hot bath, resolves to learn about the Starmaker life, and marvels at land-steeped magic from buried Starmakers. She finds a curt dinner note and falls asleep.

Waking near nightfall, Aurora dons an elegant green gown. Ina escorts her to a candlelit dining hall overflowing with flowers. The Starmaker chastises her lateness; Aurora bristles, noticing the rabbit—Constance—ensconced on a chair. The silent staff serve soup, and the isolation unsettles Aurora. When she asks if meals are always so cold, the Starmaker claims he only speaks when needed; Aurora moves to take dinner in her room.

He stops her, saying these dinners are for her future loneliness, not his. Pressed for specifics, the Starmaker finally explains the cost of their role: Aurora will stop aging, outlive everyone she loves, be known only by the title, bury staff and animals repeatedly, speak just to remember her voice, and eventually forget her former name. When a successor comes, she will pass on her knowledge and die alone, her magic feeding the land—“There will be no rest for you.” Overwhelmed and in tears, Aurora flees the dining room.
