30: Illusion

Aurora receives word from Elsie that candy stripe phlox near their cottage is turning gray. She and Caspian visit her family, announce their recent midnight wedding, and are warmly welcomed by Mama, Aspen, Elsie, Evander, and Samuel. Though Aurora longs to stay, they depart to continue patrolling the woods.

At the forest edge they find extensive patches of gray phlox. Caspian studies trees and soil, then grimly realizes the cause: the land is signaling the need for a new Starmaker’s remains to reinforce its defenses. He explains that buried Starmakers’ lingering magic fortifies the mountain against the Frost, and that once his remaining power transfers to Aurora, his body must be interred to strengthen the land as a fourth source.

Accepting that they can no longer delay, they head back. Aurora is cut by a branch; a drop of her blood falls to the ground, and she thinks she sees a flower regain its color. At the glacier, Caspian insists on releasing the light himself, sending it between the peaks into darkness.

Returning to the castle, they dine with the staff, then spend the night together—talking, laughing, and holding each other—aware time is running out. Morning brings the inevitable separation as Caspian rises from bed, and Aurora feels an aching cold at his absence.

In his own point of view, Caspian reflects that he had planned to die alone, but Aurora’s love changed everything. Unready to say goodbye, he retrieves an old journal and writes a final letter to Aurora, leaving a tear-smudged farewell before the coming ritual and his burial.
