CHAPTER 73: JON

Dragged from an ice cell, Jon is told by Janos Slynt and Ser Alliser Thorne that he will parley with Mance Rayder—then learns the true mission is to assassinate him. Despite injury and cold, Jon descends the Wall, resigning himself to likely death to serve the Watch.

Tormund meets Jon and escorts him through the wildling camp, trading grim news about the battle and Ygritte’s death. In Mance’s tent, with Dalla in labor and Val attending, Jon beholds a massive rune-banded warhorn that Mance claims is the Horn of Winter. Mance proposes opening the gate to let the free folk pass south in exchange for the horn, arguing that the Others are the true enemy and that sorcery is perilous.

Jon probes whether Mance can keep the king’s peace if admitted; Mance refuses kneeling or southern laws. Before Jon can act—whether to kill Mance or destroy the horn—warhorns sound. Scouts report armored foes advancing from the east. The camp surges into confusion as rangers appear, then far larger forces emerge: columns of heavy horse with bright banners.

Mance arms and rides to meet the attack. Harma Dogshead charges and is later slain, Tormund’s lines are flanked, and giants on mammoths become rallying points amidst panic and fire. Varamyr’s eagle is set ablaze aloft, sending the skinchanger into agony as wolves and shadowcat break control.

As knights crash through the wildling formations, great royal standards unfurl—a flaming heart and a crowned stag—and the charging host cries “Stannis!” The wildling army buckles; Mance is swallowed by the steel tide, giants hold in islands, and tents burn. With Stannis Baratheon’s sudden arrival turning the battle, Jon withdraws back into the tent.
