CHAPTER 65: ARYA

Arya wakes each day to a hollow grief after the Red Wedding, obeying Sandor Clegane’s harsh routine while finding solace in nightly wolf dreams where she leads a great pack. Sandor drives them onward, furious and exhausted, while Arya weighs escape or killing him but sees nowhere to go.

On the roads, they hide from Frey riders. In a hollow they find a dying archer wearing Ser Marq Piper’s badge, his shoulder shattered and suppurating. At the man’s request, Arya brings water in Sandor’s helm; Sandor then grants him mercy by stabbing him through the heart and shows Arya where to strike. They loot coins, a jeweled dagger that Arya keeps, and a kettle helm.

Sandor decides to head for the Eyrie to ransom Arya to Lysa Arryn. That night Arya dreams as a wolf, dragging a pale woman’s corpse from the river before fleeing mounted men; the dream convinces her that Catelyn is dead. In the morning she tells Sandor, who accepts it in silence, and they continue east toward the Mountains of the Moon.

They stop at a small mountain village building a palisade, where Sandor works for ale and rest. Locals warn that winter, clans, and guarded roads make the Vale unreachable. After the wall is finished, the elder recognizes Sandor as the Hound and, fearing trouble, pays them to leave. Sandor trades his longaxe for an old sword and obsessively sharpens it as they depart.

Turning south to the riverlands, Sandor proposes Riverrun and the Blackfish as a potential ransom. Arya, doubting recognition or mercy, suggests going to the Wall to find Jon Snow. Sandor dismisses the plan as impossible, bristles at jibes about losing his nerve, and bluntly says he cares nothing for her brother, invoking his own. They press on toward Riverrun amid unresolved tension.
