CHAPTER 52: ARYA

Overview

Arya and Sandor Clegane reach the Twins as the Red Wedding erupts into slaughter. Frey riders pour out while the feast tents burn, confirming the betrayal and Robb’s doom. Clegane kills attackers and insists Robb is dead. When Arya dashes for the gate to reach her mother, Clegane stops her by striking her down.

Summary

Arya and Sandor Clegane approach the Twins in darkness and rain, seeing the portcullis rise and the drawbridge lowered. As their wayn bogs in the mud, a torrent of armored Frey riders with torches and longaxes surges from the gate, while distant drums and music echo.

Behind them, the feast tents collapse and ignite under fire arrows and catapulted pitch, turning the camp into a blazing killing ground. A wolf’s howl seems to cut through the chaos, filling Arya with dread and grief as she realizes a massacre is underway.

Three Frey riders break off to attack. Clegane frees Stranger and charges, turning one blow and suffering a glancing strike. A third rider targets Arya; she pelts him with a rock, briefly stalling him as they circle the wayn. Clegane kills the others—one drowned beneath his horse, another pierced through the throat—and then brains Arya’s pursuer with a captured longaxe.

Donning his hound’s helm, Clegane orders Arya to flee, telling her Robb is surely dead as the battlefield burns and Freys ride down fleeing men. Arya insists Robb and Catelyn are inside and tries to reach them as the portcullis lowers and the drawbridge lifts, desperate to save her mother.

Arya sprints for the gate through mud and rising water, but Stranger thunders after her. As Arya runs for her life rather than her family, Clegane overtakes her and strikes her in the back of the head with the longaxe, knocking her senseless and preventing her from entering the slaughter.
