CHAPTER 26: JON

Under a moonless but clear sky, Jon climbs a hill to find Ghost and reflects on stars, his lost Stark identity, and the vows he has already compromised among the free folk. Knowing the wildlings will go over the Wall on the morrow, he parts from Ghost, urging the direwolf to find Castle Black to serve as a wordless warning.

Returning to the wildling camp hidden within a vast cave, Jon is summoned before Styr and Jarl. They question him about Night’s Watch patrols, routes, and garrisons. Jon provides procedures and tactics but subtly inflates the Watch’s numbers, risking discovery to protect his brothers while maintaining his cover.

Searching for Ygritte, Jon follows her into a deeper grotto with a cold pool and a waterfall. Ygritte speaks of the many caves beneath the hills and the lost under-Wall passage called Gorne’s Way, telling the tale of Gorne and Gendel and their children still weeping in the dark. Their talk turns intimate; Jon and Ygritte make love openly, further binding Jon emotionally to her and the free folk.

As the torch gutters out, they linger in darkness, playing and returning to each other despite Jon’s flickering guilt. Ygritte wishes to remain in the cave forever, while Jon knows dawn will bring the attempt to cross the Wall, his deception with Styr unresolved and his vows more fragile than ever.
