CHAPTER 64: JON

Jon wakes from a haunted dream of Winterfell and Ygritte to horns sounding at Castle Black. He arms himself and ascends the Wall with a small, ragged garrison as distant fires and mammoth calls confirm Mance Rayder’s arrival. Donal Noye orders flaming pitch from trebuchets to light the killing ground, then takes men below to hold the tunnel, leaving Jon in command atop the Wall.

Through a freezing night, Jon directs blind archery, catapults, and pitch to harry the unseen host. One trebuchet fails, Septon Cellador drunkenly prays, and the men endure, convinced the main attack is still to come. Jon’s fever and leg throb, but he repeats Noye’s charge: the Wall is his to hold.

At grey dawn the full scope of Mance’s army appears—giants, mammoths, horsemen, chariots, and masses of foot. Jon rallies flagging spirits, reminding them the enemy cannot climb seven hundred feet of ice. He targets the giants and their ram, times volleys, and orders caltrops, fire-spears, and burning oil. The giants pushing the ram fall, mammoths panic, the center collapses, and the wildlings break off in disorder.

Exhausted, Jon yields the Wall to Grenn and descends with Pyp to inspect the tunnel. Inside, they find the outer oak gate shattered and a terrible slaughter: Donal Noye and his men died after killing Mag the Mighty, who tore through iron bars before Noye’s last stroke took the giant’s throat.

Surveying the ruined approach and dead giants outside, Jon orders the outer gate patched and the tunnel blocked back to the second gate. Maester Aemon gently refuses command and declares Jon must lead until the garrison returns, citing Noye, Qhorin, and Mormont’s choices. “The Wall is yours, Jon Snow.”
