CHAPTER 43: ARYA

The Brotherhood Without Banners returns to High Heart and camps among the weirwood stumps. Thoros stares into the fire without success, while Beric broods over his repeated resurrections. That night, the Ghost of High Heart arrives seeking wine, payment, and a song.

The dwarf woman prophesies: the “wet” kraken king is dead (Balon Greyjoy), Hoster Tully is gone, and she speaks of a great dog descending on a fevered goat. She dreams of a wolf howling unheard, a cacophony with little bells, a maid with purple serpents (poison) who later slays a giant in a castle of snow, and announces Catelyn is bound for a wedding at the Twins. She recoils from Arya, sensing death upon her.

As rain lashes the hills, illness spreads among the men and the Brotherhood seeks shelter in a long-abandoned village. On the ride, Arya befriends Ned, revealed as Edric Dayne, who claims his wetnurse Wylla is Jon Snow’s mother, unsettling Arya. Harwin counsels her to let old Harrenhal-era rumors rest.

In the ruined stable, Thoros glimpses “Riverrun” and roaring red-and-gold lions in the flames, reading an imminent Lannister siege. He cannot see Robb or Catelyn and believes Catelyn has gone to the Twins, aligning with the crone’s words. The outlaws debate whether to take Arya to Riverrun for ransom; Beric opts to gather intelligence first at Acorn Hall and nearby allies.

Frustrated that delays keep her from her family, Arya bolts into the storm. Outside, Sandor Clegane intercepts her, seizing Arya and dragging her to his horse despite her struggles, ending the chapter with Arya recaptured by the Hound.
