CHAPTER 71: DAENERYS

Atop the Great Pyramid, Daenerys surveys Meereen, reflecting on conquest, justice, and loneliness as her dragons grow bolder. She orders the removal of crucified Great Masters’ corpses and considers Missandei’s counsel to return cleaned bones to families. Two envoys arrive: Ghael from Astapor and the Qartheen captain of the Indigo Star.

Ghael announces that Cleon, a former butcher, executed Dany’s Astapori council, seized power, and offers alliance and marriage against Yunkai. Daenerys, dismayed, dismisses him. The Qartheen captain reports Astapor in chaos—dead in streets, pyramids at war, and boys seized to raise new Unsullied—and requests slaves for trade.

Faced with nobles begging to sell themselves abroad, Daenerys reluctantly permits voluntary self-enslavement (but forbids selling spouses or children) and imposes a tenth on each sale, with literate freedmen to keep records. She then summons Ser Barristan and Ser Jorah to account for their deceptions and their crucial sewer assault that helped take Meereen.

Ser Barristan admits hiding his identity to judge her sanity and swears anew to her service; Daenerys returns his sword and accepts his oath. Ser Jorah confesses taking Varys’s gold and reporting on her even as far as Qarth; confronted with endangering her and her unborn child, he begs forgiveness. Daenerys, torn between gratitude and betrayal, banishes Jorah from Meereen by dawn.

Afterward, Daenerys wrestles with doubt, seeks counsel from Barristan about her father’s madness (postponing the full tale), and passes a sleepless night. At dawn, she gathers her captains, rejects comparisons to mere conquest, and declares that she will remain in Meereen to heal the city, grow her dragons, and learn to rule—choosing queenship over further khal-like plunder.
