CHAPTER 29: ARYA

Arya enters battered Stoney Sept with the Brotherhood, hearing Harwin recall the Battle of the Bells and seeing fresh scars from recent wars. Inside the closed town, wary townsfolk slowly emerge as the group rides to the market square, where iron crow cages display dead and dying men the locals call “wolves.”

Learning the prisoners allegedly killed and raped at Tumbler’s Falls, Arya wrestles with horror and kinship. She defies a townsman to fetch water for three surviving captives, while Harwin and Lem object to slow death by thirst. After Arya’s mercy, Anguy ends the men swiftly with arrows, silencing the square.

The Brotherhood takes shelter at the Peach, an inn-brothel. The innkeep Tansy teases old friends, insists on baths, and dresses Arya in girlish clothes. Evening brings songs, laughter, and comings and goings with the serving girls. Bella, who claims King Robert fathered her, flirts with Gendry, exposing his discomfort and class insecurity.

Arya overhears rumors that Catelyn freed Jaime for love, which wounds and angers her. A drunken patron pesters Arya until Gendry drives him off, then bitterly rebuffs Arya, calling her “m’lady,” deepening their rift. Arya retreats to bed, reciting her death list before falling asleep to a wolf-pack dream that affirms strength and belonging.

At dawn, a chorus of dogs wakes the Peach. From the window, Arya and others see townsmen empty a corpse from a cage as the Mad Huntsman returns with a bound Lannister man. Jeers and missiles greet the captive. When his face turns, Arya realizes he is not Jaime Lannister but Sandor Clegane, the Hound—one of the names on her list—suggesting her prayers for vengeance may be answered.
