CHAPTER 41: JON
Overview
Jon marches with the Thenns through the Gift, torn between his vow to the Watch and his bond with Ygritte. At abandoned Queenscrown, Styr orders Jon to kill an old man; Jon refuses and Ygritte slits the man’s throat. A grey direwolf’s sudden attack lets Jon flee on the old man’s horse, wounded, heading for Castle Black.
Summary
Jon Snow and Ygritte traverse the abandoned farms and towers of the Gift with Styr’s Thenns, debating land, freedom, and the right to rule. Jon reflects on Ned Stark’s old plans for resettling the Gift and on his own divided loyalties, while recalling Qhorin Halfhand’s command to ride, eat, and fight with the wildlings until the time comes.
Styr avoids villages and Watch patrols as they push south. Jon knows Castle Black’s weaknesses and fears the Thenns could massacre its unprepared garrison. His growing familiarity with Jarl’s raiders—and his love for Ygritte—only deepens his dread of the betrayal he must eventually commit.
As a storm breaks, the column reaches an abandoned lakeside village facing a towered holdfast—Queenscrown. Scouts find an old man sheltering in the roofless inn. Styr commands Jon to kill the captive to prevent any warning from reaching the Watch. Remembering his father and the Halfhand, Jon balks, arguing the man is no sentry and has done no harm.
Pressed by Styr and Ygritte to prove he is no crow, Jon refuses. Ygritte, asserting her own freedom, cuts the old man’s throat herself. Lightning strikes the distant tower, and a grey direwolf explodes into the inn’s chaos, ripping into Thenns. In the confusion, Jon draws Longclaw, fells attackers, seizes the old man’s horse, and breaks free under thunder and rain.
Fleeing into the night, Jon is struck in the thigh by an arrow—possibly Ygritte’s. After escaping pursuit, he painfully pushes the arrow through, binds his wound, and orients by the stars. Hollow but resolute, Jon turns the horse north toward the Wall and Castle Black.
