CHAPTER 3: ARYA

In the predawn rain, Arya leads Gendry and Hot Pie away from Harrenhal after stealing three horses, a map, and a dagger, and killing a gate guard using Jaqen H’ghar’s coin as a ruse. Expecting pursuit by Roose Bolton’s men or Vargo Hoat’s Bloody Mummers, she avoids roads, follows streams to confuse dogs, and keeps a steady, cautious pace through woods and burned fields.

They pass wolves at a kill and ride through a hanged men’s orchard, where Arya recites her kill list and eats a wormy apple. At daybreak they consult the map; Arya plans to reach Riverrun by following the Trident upstream. She conceals her identity from Hot Pie but remains determined to reach her kin. The terrain grows hilly and wet, slowing the city-born boys, yet Arya refuses to abandon them.

Spotting a river, Hot Pie declares it the Trident, but Arya reasons it is a smaller tributary. With Gendry’s help, they debate the map’s blue lines and uncertain bearings. Unwilling to risk heading the wrong way or back toward Harrenhal, Arya decides to cross and continue north. They ford two rivers in rain and cold without lighting a fire, sharing bread and cheese as night falls.

Utterly exhausted, Arya tries to push on but repeatedly dozes in the saddle. Gendry insists they stop; Hot Pie collapses asleep mid-bite. Arya lays her sword at hand and drifts off, vowing not to be taken by the Mummers.

In a vivid dream, Arya is a great wolf leading a pack. Four Mummers ride through the rain—a Lyseni, an Ibbenese axeman, a Dothraki named Iggo with bells, and a Dornishman. The pack ambushes them: the hairy axeman and the dark archer die quickly, the Lyseni is run down, and Arya-wolf tears off Iggo’s arm after his horse kills one of her sisters. The dream underscores Arya’s predatory resolve and her uncanny bond with the roaming wolves.
