CHAPTER 8: DAENERYS

Overview

Becalmed en route to Pentos, Daenerys enjoys her growing dragons and hears Arstan’s measured memories of Rhaegar and Targaryen dragons. Ser Jorah warns that Illyrio’s men may betray her and urges a detour to Astapor to buy Unsullied. Daenerys chooses Astapor, and Jorah crosses a boundary by kissing her.

Summary

Daenerys watches her dragons play above the windless sea as Illyrio’s ships tow the heavy cog Balerion toward Pentos. She recalls her seafaring childhood and Viserys, while Captain Groleo grows more comfortable with the dragons. Arstan Whitebeard and Ser Jorah discuss dragon lore and Rhaegar; Arstan claims dragons grow with food and freedom and shares memories that paint Rhaegar as able and dutiful. Jorah bristles at Arstan’s confidence.

Daenerys weighs threats and allies—Belwas, Arstan, Illyrio, Xaro, Quaithe—while trusting in Jorah, her bloodriders, and her dragons. A welcome wind finally returns and the ships surge west. Later, in her cabin, Daenerys feeds the dragons using the High Valyrian command “dracarys.”

Jorah asks for privacy and warns of the prophecy of three betrayals, suspecting Illyrio’s men and urging caution about returning to Pentos. He proposes diverting to Slaver’s Bay to buy Unsullied in Astapor, recounting their legendary stand at Qohor as proof of their worth. He argues they can fund purchases with Illyrio’s trade goods aboard.

Convinced that an army will strengthen her position and test Illyrio’s loyalty, Daenerys decides to change course for Astapor despite the risks. As she dresses to inform the captain, Jorah suddenly kisses her, confessing long-suppressed desire. Daenerys, startled and conflicted, reasserts her status as queen, leaving their relationship unsettled even as her strategic path shifts.
