CHAPTER 39: ARYA

Before dawn, Anguy’s arrow kills a rooftop sentry, and the Brotherhood Without Banners launches a coordinated assault on a septry held by the Brave Companions. Flaming arrows and a charge led by Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr break the defenders. Several Mummers die attempting to flee the burning building; two Dothraki escape when Beric allows them to carry word to Harrenhal.

Jack-Be-Lucky, Harwin, and Merrit rescue eight brown brothers and seize Septon Utt, a known predator. Beric orders swift trials. Witnesses recount raids, rapes, murders, and Utt’s abuses of boys. Utt and the captured Mummers are hanged. The outlaws and monks share a meager meal; Beric refuses prayers to R’hllor under the monks’ roof and gives the brothers silver to rebuild.

That night, Beric and Thoros discuss Beric’s six deaths and resurrections, the cost to his memory and life, and the Brotherhood’s dire need for supplies. Arya asks if a headless man can be revived and hears Thoros’s limitations. Beric promises to ransom Arya to Riverrun and swears on his honor. Gendry, moved by their ideals, offers his smithing and is knighted by Beric as “Ser Gendry of the hollow hill.”

Sandor Clegane abruptly returns, demanding his confiscated gold. Tensions flare as archers ready bows, but Beric stays them. Learning the gold was sent to buy grain and seed, Sandor mocks them, trades barbs with Arya, and leaves when refused payment. Beric forbids pursuing or killing him, honoring Sandor’s earlier trial by battle.

Restless and grieving those who left or died, Arya clutches Jaqen’s coin and whispers her kill list before sleep. Wolves howl through the night. At dawn, the Brotherhood prepares to move on; Gendry apologizes for staying with them, and Arya, hurt but defiant, insists she will soon be ransomed to Riverrun.
