Part I The Basement & the Parlor — Chapter Six

Overview

Flashbacks reveal Marya’s lively Isaugh life and her secret courtship with Thomas Senlin. In the Basement present, Senlin confronts Finn Goll, recovers his empty satchel and Marya’s silks, and learns harsh Tower truths about Ostriches and hods. Goll refuses to guide him, warning trust is ruinous, while Senlin’s resolve and self-doubt deepen.

Summary

The chapter opens with a flashback to Isaugh, where Thomas Senlin’s sudden engagement and marriage to Marya scandalize the town. Marya, beloved pianist at the Blue Tattoo and clerk at Berks’ General Store, keeps their courtship secret until telling her cousin Olivet while bagging rice. Their swift wedding hints at private motives Marya coyly calls a “gift.”

Back in the Basement, Senlin holds the man carrying his stolen satchel: Finn Goll. The bag is empty; Goll claims he bought it from a branded “Ostrich,” a Parlor exile. Senlin reclaims the satchel and Marya’s silks, balking at Goll’s grim tale of eye-taking punishments, but follows him to drink.

At a public beer-me-go-round, Senlin pedals with strangers for free beer, soothed by the drink and briefly buoyed by Goll’s banter. Goll teases out Senlin’s profession and warns him not to tell anyone he seeks his wife, insisting the Tower’s “good” cannot help and the “bad” will bleed him dry.

Goll sketches the Tower’s cruel economy—Ostriches thrown down from the Parlor, hods enslaved to haul materials upward—and rebuffs Senlin’s offer of employment: the search must be solitary. When the beer-me’s spring releases, the platform spins wildly, disorienting Senlin.

As he clings on, Senlin recalls Marya’s joy at being the center of a spinning, musical circle, realizing her words expose his own puffed-up reserve. The bundle of Marya’s underthings bursts free and scatters into the crowd, symbolically underscoring his tenuous grip on what remains of her presence.
