Part II The Baths — Chapter Six
Overview
Senlin learns the Commissioner’s mansion is a fortress and decides deceit is the only way to reclaim Ogier’s masterpiece and learn Marya’s fate. He confronts Tarrou’s buried grief to win his aid. Together they attend the Commissioner’s gala, initiating a perilous heist that raises the stakes against the Red Hand’s master.
Summary
After Ogier refuses any payment but the return of his stolen masterpiece, Senlin spends the night learning about the Commissioner’s fortress-like mansion, its armed guards, scent-tracking dogs, cannons guarding the ballroom balcony, and the ominous, ever-present Red Hand. The overwhelming security forces Senlin to abandon force or stealth and embrace deception.
At dawn, Senlin wrestles with how his old virtues have become liabilities and resolves to outwit the Commissioner by exploiting flaws instead of strengths. Still desperate for news of Marya, he chooses the painting heist as the only path to Ogier’s information.
Senlin wakes Tarrou and, over coffee at Cafe Rossi, reveals he knows Tarrou once lost his wife at the Tower and then drifted into shame and dissipation. Senlin mirrors Tarrou’s story with his own, confessing his failures and pleading for help. Tarrou urges coercing Ogier instead, but Senlin refuses to become a tyrant. Despite condemning the plan as suicidal, Tarrou agrees to assist.
That night they approach the mansion gala. Amid lavish guests and strict security, Senlin stays plainly dressed while Tarrou dons flamboyant finery. As they enter under Tarrou’s counsel that the Commissioner is humorless and severe, their dangerous deception begins inside the stronghold where the painting hangs behind glass and guns.
