Part I The Basement & the Parlor — Chapter Eight

Overview

Senlin enters the Parlor’s backstage, is bathed, costumed as the butler “Isaac,” and forced to follow strict rules. Overwhelmed by a corridor of identical butlers, he panics until he finds an unlocked door into a kitchen set. There, he regroups, eats, and recalls Marya, reaffirming his purpose.

Summary

Expecting a traditional theater, Senlin instead enters a bustling backstage changing hall where armed attendants bathe and dress him in a butler’s costume. His possessions, including money and tickets, are locked away, and he’s handed a program outlining a domestic melodrama and his role as “Isaac,” the butler.

Reading the trite plot of the Mayfairs and their apprentice, Senlin bristles at the romantic morality play he’s to improvise within. An attendant enforces the rules—no costume changes, follow the key, and lock doors—making clear this is a participatory charade.

Driven by anxiety and the press of hundreds of identically dressed players, Senlin forces his way through a curving corridor, trying doors until one opens. He locks himself into a quiet kitchen set, stokes the fire, drinks, and ravenously eats ham, momentarily soothed by the homely scene.

A teacup’s dogwood pattern triggers a tender memory of Marya and her acceptance of “gaps,” reminding Senlin of his love and purpose. He gathers himself in the hush, resolved to push through the Parlor toward the Baths where he hopes to find her.
