Part I The Basement & the Parlor — Chapter Twelve

Overview

Attendants kill Mayfair and seize Thomas Senlin and Edith, marching them behind the Parlor’s facade where clerks secretly observe patrons. A genial Receptionist promises redress and assigns their case to Anen Ceph. Instead, a clerk ushers them to a hatch that traps them in a cage on the Tower’s outer wall, revealing a calculated betrayal.

Summary

Mayfair collapses, shot in the back by the stony-faced attendant who had earlier escorted Thomas Senlin. Relief turns to apprehension as armed attendants seize Senlin and Edith and march them through unmarked corridors. Along the way, they pass alcoves where clerks peer through brass eyepieces, revealing the Parlor’s secret surveillance and potential witnesses to Pining’s murder and Mayfair’s attack.

After an exhausting trek, they reach a grand administrative foyer. Their escorts release them, and a courteous General Receptionist interviews Edith and then Senlin, gathering personal details and promising compensation. He assigns their case to Assistant to the Chief Registrar Anen Ceph and calls a tall, gaunt clerk to escort them to a private room while evidence is collected.

The clerk leads them through a busy hospital ward, past nurses, injured patrons, and mysterious copper canisters with large valve wheels. Expecting rest and care, Senlin and Edith are instead directed into a narrow, heated room with a low iron hatch. Despite a flicker of unease, they comply.

As they stoop through the hatch, the floor lurches and the door slams, bolting shut behind them. Disoriented by glare and heat, they discover wire mesh walls and realize they’ve been confined in a small cage affixed to the Tower’s outer face, exposed to the open sky. The promised investigation was a ruse, and they have been summarily disposed of.
