Part III New Babel — Chapter Seven

Overview

Adam recounts his disastrous Parlor contract, branding, and how Voleta bonded herself to Finn Goll to save him. His attempt to buy her freedom ends in piracy and the loss of his eye, convincing him to wait out the debt. Senlin accompanies Adam to the Steam Pipe, where Rodion threatens to reassign Voleta unless the organ is fixed, and Senlin poses as a patron to gain leverage.

Summary

Adam tells Thomas Senlin how he mistakenly took a Parlor job, believing he’d be paid, only to discover after six months that he owed sixteen mina. Branded and sent toward the hods, he was saved when Voleta struck a bond with Finn Goll, pledging herself while Adam worked to repay the debt.

Adam explains why the debt lingers: he must bribe Rodion to keep Voleta onstage and out of private rooms, funneling most earnings back into the same system. Desperate, he robbed new arrivals at Babel Station to free Voleta, but pirates seized his spoils mid-journey and dumped him at the Parlor, where enforcers took his eye. Resigned, Adam insists only patience can free them.

To lift Adam’s spirits, Senlin accompanies him to New Babel’s Steam Pipe. They enter through service passages, touring boilers and pipes that power the theater’s organ, then reach backstage amid the towering ranks of dummy and sounding pipes.

Rodion arrives in theatrical finery, complaining of a weak Ottava Diapason and threatening to move Voleta to “other work” if the organ isn’t fixed before her performance. Adam hurries to repair it, while Senlin, reading Rodion’s vanity, pretends he is there for the show, allowing Rodion to believe he holds leverage.
