Part I The Basement & the Parlor — Chapter Thirteen
Overview
Trapped in a tiny cage bolted to the Tower’s exterior, Senlin and Edith endure heat, vertigo, and uncertainty. They witness a clockwork spider repairing the facade and share candid histories, including Edith’s failed marriage. Anen Ceph rules to send Senlin up to the Baths and expel Edith to the First Floor for Parlor violations. Ceph offers minimal aid, and Edith reveals expulsion likely means branding, heightening the stakes.
Summary
Perched a hundred feet above the Market in a cramped wire cage, Thomas Senlin panics and pounds the hatch until Edith restrains him. They crowd together under a makeshift coat awning to escape the sun and listen to the Market below, trying not to voice fears about dying there.
As dusk falls, Senlin studies the Tower’s facade and spots a clockwork spider repairing cracks with hardening gel, a small wonder that briefly restores his hope. To distract themselves, they talk; Senlin admits he is on his honeymoon, and Edith, avoiding questions about Marya, recounts her life managing her family’s farm.
Edith describes being the capable “Generaless,” her arranged marriage to Franklin Winters to protect the estate, his maneuver to sideline her over a mild allergy, and her secret barrenness from a riding accident. Refusing to remain marginalized and denied a divorce, she left and came to the Parlor, later regretting the ruse of playing a socialite.
The hatch opens to Anen Ceph, assistant to the Registrar. He announces the decision: Senlin will be escorted to the third floor Baths, but Edith will be expelled to the First Floor for leaving via the wrong hall and for letting several Parlor fires go out. Senlin insists on justice and safe removal from the cage; Ceph promises to consult the Registrar and passes in a flask and hard bread before shutting the hatch.
Watching an airship rise over the Market, Senlin longs to escape. Edith, staring at the sprawl below, grimly warns that expulsion includes branding to prevent reentry, leaving their fates brutally divided and uncertain.
